BiteScore is part of BiteGuide and shows how active a fish species is likely to be right now, using a simple rating system from 1 to 10. The higher the score, the better the conditions are for that species to feed, and for you to catch them.
The score is specific to each species, since different fish respond differently to the same conditions. For example, conditions that are great for bass may be less favorable for trout.
To make it easier to interpret, BiteScore is grouped into three activity levels:
- Between 8–10 - Active, means conditions are very good and fish are likely feeding, so more aggressive techniques often work well.
- Between 4–7- Normal, which represents average to good conditions where a range of approaches can work depending on how fish react.
- Between 1–3 - Slow, appears when there are slow fishing conditions, where fish are less active and less likely to feed. More subtle techniques are usually needed on these days.
BiteScore is based on a combination of real-time conditions like water temperature, weather, season, and time of day, combined with species biology, expert angler knowledge, and data from millions of catches logged on Fishbrain.
Several factors influence the score, including water temperature, air temperature, wind, cloud cover, air pressure, and even moon phase. Each of these plays a role in how fish behave and how likely they are to feed. For example, different species tend to be more active when water temperature is within their preferred range, while sudden pressure changes, or extreme temperatures, can reduce activity.
You can tap the BiteScore indicator to see more details behind the rating. This includes a breakdown of current conditions and how each one is influencing fish activity, along with a short Game plan that gives you quick, practical guidance on how to approach your fishing.
Each condition is shown with an indicator: a green up arrow means it’s working in your favor, a grey neutral marker means it has little impact, and a red down arrow means it’s reducing activity. This helps explain why the score is high, or low, and how you can adjust your approach.
You can also view how fish activity is expected to change throughout the day and over the coming days, helping you decide the best time to fish.
